Description / Johannesburg Trams

This DVD is the third in the ‘Trams around the World’ series and focuses on Johannesburg but does include Cape Town, Durban & Kimberley. This programme gives a unique and colourful assembly of footage, from both Britain and South Africa, depicting most car types in action. Single-truckers, The London United ‘look-alikes’, Native Cars, Air Bogies, ‘Bluebirds’, Experimentals and Streamliners. Historical background stills help to show the development of the tram system. Footage from 1959 will take you round the depots, help you climb into the hilly northern suburbs, and tackle the tortuous twists and turns en-route to Observatory and Yeoville. Video from 1961 shows the scene as you travel out to Newlands via the interlaced track at Vrededop and along the road-side reservation at Brixton and Westdene. Lastly ride the busy Eastern Valley routes with Air Bogies and Streamliners nose to tail on Main Street, manoeuvring round one-way workings and powering along the three- mile straight run to Malvern.
